Linking ‘toxic outliers’ to environmental justice communities

چکیده

Several key studies have found that a smallminority of producers, polluting at levels far exceeding group averages, generate themajority of overall exposure to industrial toxics. Frequently, such patterns go unnoticed and are understudied outside of the academic community. To our knowledge, no research to date has systematically described the scope and extent of extreme variations in industrially based exposure estimates and sought to link inequities in harmproduced to inequities in exposure. In an analysis of all permitted industrial facilities across theUnited States, we show that there exists a class of hyper-polluters—theworst-of-the-worst—that disproportionately expose communities of color and low income populations to chemical releases. This study hopes tomove beyond a traditional environmental justice research frame, bringing new computationalmethods and perspectives aimed at the empirical study of societal power dynamics. Ourfindings suggest the possibility that substantial environmental gainsmay bemade through selective environmental enforcement, rather than sweeping initiatives.

Toxic disputes and the rise of environmental justice in Australia.

The paper examines the rise of environmental justice issues in Australia, evident in two toxic disputes; the first, in a Perth outer suburb in Western Australia where residents faced both a hazardous waste dump and the nation's biggest chemical fire; and the second, in the Sydney suburb of Botany where residents were confronted with the destruction of what is thought to be, the world's largest ...

Sacrifice Zones: The Front Lines of Toxic Chemical Exposure in the United States

Steve Lerner has written a compelling treatise on why the dominant environmental protection paradigm should be overhauled to emphasize prevention, precaution, and equal protection. Sacrifice Zones is a significant complement to three decades of environmental justice research; it provides irrefutable empirical evidence that not all American communities are created equal. Over the course of 2 yea...

Environmental Justice in California: An Analysis on the Correlation Between Toxic Release and Population Distribution

Environmental Justice is a movement that was born in the early 1980s to assure fair distribution of environmental risks and benefits (Bullard 1996). In many occasions, minority communities are more affected by environmentally hazardous substances and activities than other population groups. This normally happens because they either ignore the problem or have less power to have an opinion about ...

Recently, conflicts and challenges have emerged regarding environmental justice and research ethics for some indigenous communities. Despite having community support and federal and private funding, the BMPS remains incomplete due to repeated d...
